La Macchia Group's Ironman

by La Macchia Group

At La Macchia Group, we take pride in the work our team puts into their career- and their personal growth. On September 8th, La Macchia Group sponsored our very own Kevin Kelroy, Project Architect, who competed in the Madison, Wisconsin Ironman race.

2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, and finishing with 26.2 miles of running makes up this 140.6 mile long race. From swimming through Lake Monona to cycling over hilly terrain and pushing through a grueling run, Kevin exemplified the resilience and dedication we value at La Macchia Group. Join us as we share his journey and the inspiration behind his remarkable accomplishment!

The Motivation to Take on the Ironman

Kevin was a runner in the past, but life got the best of him and it was no longer a priority. Then, when his health needed improvement, he knew something needed to be done. He started with an optional weight-loss challenge through La Macchia Group, and kept going. With former experience of running marathons, he took the momentum from the weight loss challenge and started training with the goal of completing another. After accomplishing that, he set his mind to an even larger goal: to become an Ironman.

Preparation for a Grueling Race

Kevin's training was a huge help in giving him the confidence to feel ready to take on such a challenge. Sometimes training the whole day on Saturday in order to have family time on Sunday, preparing for an Ironman is no easy task. He also had so many people supporting him, Kevin said, “When I told people what I was doing, nobody asked the question of “If you think you can do it”. People asked other questions, but nobody thought I couldn’t do it.”

The Temptation to Quit

Mile 5 of the last portion, the running course, was the first time Kevin thought about giving up. With 21 miles of running still to go, he decided to push through, ensuring he would be an Ironman finisher.

Crossing the Finish Line

Kevin describes the overwhelming and electric atmosphere of the last two blocks before the finish line. Filled with lines of cheering strangers the whole way through, he was excited to get to stop and ring the “first time finisher” bell, causing the spectators’ cheers to grow even louder, accepting the encouragement from the race supporters. Just after the bell he ran across the finish line, where he finally reached his goal and earned the title “Ironman. Being guided by volunteers through the water tent, photo tent, and finally the food tent. The two main things on his mind after finishing were to find his family- and food!

Perseverance in Competition and in Life

The intensity of the Ironman was a life-changing experience and Kevin's perseverance was critical for his completion.  Kevin says, “Much like my day to day work, there may be a plan laid out, but nobody is drawing you a roadmap. You know what the end goal is but it’s your job to reach that goal.” Kevin goes on to say that when things go wrong or problems arise, everything leading up to that point has gone well, confidence in yourself always is key.

Kevin's dedication, perseverance, and strength throughout the Ironman have truly inspired all of us at La Macchia Group. It’s a reflection of the same drive and commitment Kevin brings to work every day, embodying the core values we champion as a company. Congratulations once again, Kevin, for crossing that finish line and reminding us all that with passion and determination, anything is possible!
